About OOBLE

Backstory

Many moons ago, back in the dark ages before the Brooklyn Lyceum, back when the dilapidated building on 4th Avenue and President Street was known(or not known as it were) as Public Bath #7(PB7)... the folks who would eventually run PB7 (aka the Brooklyn Lyceum) were footloose and fancy free. While home based in Brooklyn they got the opportunity to check out theater and art in many cities such Boston, New York/Brooklyn, Chicago and San Franciso(thank you expense account). While much of the Brooklyn stuff left a bit to be desired... there was a palpable pulse. The idea of some rag to tell the tale of the pulse (a la the Chicago Reader back when it was special) was bandied about. It never took flight (too much work, too costly, too much effort to get the public aware of a new, indie, truly alternative publication).

So, after pulling back and pouting a bit, we watched a few similar publications come and go.

While each of them raised the bar, the central issues remained untouched.

Where was the Brooklyn cultural love from the major newspapers, magazine, radio and television stations that was lacking despite the fact that a real, non-trivial audience lived in Brooklyn and bought their publications?

Just how completely could Brooklyn be abandoned by the "city" it was 40% of? How could someone help raise both the awareness and hopefully the quality of Brooklyn Theater/Dance/Music/Art/Culture? As the boro began reaching new heights and as the internet came around in full force.... it became clear. Now was a good time.  Rising tide raises all boats kind of thing.

But by that time we had acquired Public Bath #7 and resurrected the name of The Brooklyn Lyceum. The original Brooklyn Lyceum was one of the creators of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences that at one time directed the Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Brooklyn Institute(Museum), the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Children's Museum. So the legacy aspect is a bit confused. Add to that we are probably too busy with the Brooklyn Lyceum to nail a project of this scope alone. It still needs to be done. We hope to leverage all that is Brooklyn and all that has been Brooklyn, people that have a soft spot in their heart for Brooklyn and all Brooklynites past, present and future in the mission of excavating and restoring a legacy past that matters. Click a link to the side to see some aspects.

But more importantly. Go see some of the things we speak of here. Tell them you heard about it from us. And, most of all, tell us what you thought of the production or event. For now this page is here to let you know who we are and what we are about. Later on we will move this treatise to a side-bar and put some other content here.

Till we see you again.... Carpe Brooklyn ... It's the only one you got.
